Global Intelligence Summit - Takeaway #2, Measuring Success and Planning Ahead

On September 17, during AIRIP’s Global Intelligence Summit Day Two, we started with a panel focused on what businesses found most valuable in the analysis provided by their intelligence teams. After hearing from three private sector intelligence managers and a supply chain vice president, AIRIP hosted breakout sessions for the members to discuss how they measure the success of their reporting and what changes they would make for the future. From these discussions came two key takeaways:

One: even when members provide quantitative-driven intelligence and analysis or use dashboards to present their analysis, measuring the success of that work is still hard and usually qualitative in nature. Key measures include:

  • feedback;

  • increased or improved requests and partnerships;

  • recognition of our roles and scope;

  • being invited – or even expected – to take a seat at the table (metaphorically) for meetings and discussions.

If these measures continue after the crisis has ebbed, this signals strong, enduring success.

Two: every experience is an opportunity to learn and improve, and an unprecedented crisis provides A LOT of such opportunity. The two biggest areas for change that members identified were: improving communication and planning for surge response. 

  • Several members identified communications within their own teams or departments as a growth opportunity, while others agreed that better communication with different groups around their companies – in “normal” times and during a crisis – will be key to success. Taking the time now to lay that groundwork will better position us all for success.
  • Similarly, identifying internal teams or resources with slack capacity, vetting service providers who can provide ad-hoc support, and building a framework for a quick, global response to a large event or crisis – these are all important advance work that will enable a “surge” response to business needs while creating space for work/life balance and breaks for the analysts and other teams involved.
